Ko Samet

Travel Guide

An introduction to the Thai island of Ko Samet.

Thailand's islands and beaches are one of the reasons so many people choose to travel to the country every year. Ko Samet is one of Thailand's islands and its close proximity to Bangkok makes it a good choice for a weekend or short getaway from the hectic life Thailand's capital brings. Ko Samet is a popular weekend destination for both Thai people and tourists, but still remains quiet and enjoyable.

Ko Samet can be reached from the coastal Ban Phe, approximately three hours from Bangkok. Buses leave from Bangkok's Eastern Bus Terminal and arrive at Ban Phe, just opposite the ferry pier several times daily. A bus can also be taken from Bangkok's Mo Chit station to Rayong and a songtaew can then be taken to Ban Phe. Ferries to Ko Samet from Ban Phe take approximately 45 minutes and go to various points on the island. You will have to wait until a certain quota of passengers is met before the ferry will leave.

Once on the island, songtaew (a pick-up truck with seats in the back) and motorcycle are the only means of transport. Songtaew cost approximately 200 Baht for a private trip and motorcycles are around 300 Baht to hire for one day. Songtaew can be a painful option on Ko Samet, as the roads are very dusty and bumpy.

Ko Samet is a national park and a national park fee must be paid by all visitors to the island. Foreigners will pay 400 baht, whilst Thais will pay 40 baht.

Snorkelling, diving, hiking, boat trips and swimming are all activities that can be enjoyed from Ko Samet. The island doesn’t have much in the way of shopping, but beach accessories are available around the island.

It is worth trying some seafood whilst on Ko Samet, as there is much available. Thai and Western foods are both available at the many restaurants on the island. Many hawkers wander the beaches selling snacks such as fruit and satay sticks. There are also a variety of options for drinking. Ko Samet hosts some special events/prices on full moon and half moon dates.

Accomodation on Ko Samet is mainly centred on the East Coast of the island. During peak seasons and on public holidays, accommodation can be filled quickly, so it can be a good idea to arrive as early as possible in the day to find a place to sleep. There is a variety of different accommodation options on Ko Samet. The beaches of Ao Hin Kok and Hat Sai Keaw have many bungalow options to choose from and there are both budget and high-range options around the island.

Ko Samet is reasonably quiet and more for those who just want to relax rather than party. Although not well known for it’s diving, Ko Samet does offer a variety of activities. The island is close to Bangkok and perfect for those who do not have the extra time to travel around.
